Alejandro de la Fuente, DVM, MSc, PhD, is a Chilean-trained veterinary embryologist and currently Chief Embryologist and Project Scientist at the University of California, Davis, within the Veterinary Assisted Reproduction Laboratory. He graduated as the top DVM student at the University of Concepción and completed further veterinary training in Spain before pursuing his MSc and PhD under the supervision of Pouya Dini at University of California, Davis.

At UC Davis, Alejandro focuses on optimizing every step of the OPU-ICSI pipeline, including oocyte maturation, sperm selection, fertilization, and embryo culture. He has contributed to advancing laboratory efficiency and embryo yield, supporting both clinical services and cutting-edge research in equine assisted reproduction. His research portfolio includes important contributions to equine ICSI, embryo morphokinetics, and oocyte biology, including studies on transcriptomic profiling of cumulus–oocyte complexes and dynamic embryo development (“embryo pulsing”). He is also involved in innovative approaches such as microfluidic sperm selection and time-lapse embryo monitoring to improve developmental competence.

De la Fuente has received multiple international awards, including the IETS Poster Award, the Peter W. Farin Travel Award, and the W.R. (Twink) Allen Fellowship, reflecting his impact on the advancement of equine OPU-ICSI technologies.
