The Madigan Squeeze Made Easy
What is REPRO SQUEEZY?
REPRO SQUEEZY is a restraint device consisting of a neoprene saddle and three adjustable straps, designed to be placed around the foal’s thorax. The system is intended both to support neonatal neurological transition and as an alternative method of sedation and restraint for foals up to 30 days of age.
Aim
To promote neurological awakening and facilitate safe restraint from birth through the first month of life during minimally invasive veterinary procedures.
Mission: beyond the Madigan Squeeze
Improve foal management during the early stages of life considering the well-being of the newborn and without the use of sedative a respectful approach applying in a controlled and reproducible manner the principles of thoracic compression first described by Professor John Madigan.
Operational approach
A procedural support tool and autonomous therapeutic device, always subject to veterinary clinical assessment.
How does REPRO SQUEEZY work?
Once applied, the straps are progressively adjusted to achieve uniform and controlled thoracic compression. The compression is neither focal nor coercive; rather, it is evenly distributed and modulable, with the aim of reproducing a physiological stimulus analogous to that experienced during passage through the birth canal. The strap-tightening mechanism is self-locking.
Thoracic compression induces a reduction in behavioral reactivity and a state of drowsiness mediated by neurophysiological and sensory mechanisms.
The intensity of compression is gradually increased until recumbency is achieved, followed by a state of calm and somnolence.
The duration of the procedure may vary depending on clinical needs:
– a few minutes for brief procedures
– approximately 20 minutes for the Madigan Squeeze protocol
– 30 minutes or longer for more complex procedures
The procedure must be performed according to the foal’s behavioral response. Beyond a certain period—variable between individuals—or if the foal begins to exhibit signs of arousal, compression should be discontinued.
Subsequent release, achieved through rapid buckle release, allows immediate restoration of wakefulness and motor control.
Safe plasma administration, even with a single operator
Thanks to REPRO SQUEEZY, the foal can be maintained in a state of controlled functional immobility, allowing the veterinarian to perform procedures in a more stable, efficient, and manageable manner, even without additional assistance.
Effective restraint and reduced behavioral reactivity enhance operator safety and are particularly useful during intravenous procedures requiring prolonged stability.
In the case of intravenous plasma administration, maintaining the foal in a calm state allows for a more controlled and consistent infusion rate, improving tolerance and contributing to a reduced risk of adverse reactions.
