Stijn Schauvliege
Ghent University, Belgium

Stijn Schauvliege is a Belgian veterinary anaesthesiologist and Associate Professor at Ghent University, working in the Department of Large Animal Surgery, Anaesthesia and Orthopaedics. He graduated as a veterinarian in 2002 and completed specialist training in anaesthesia and analgesia at the same institution. He became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia in 2009 and obtained his PhD in 2010, focusing on cardiovascular effects of anaesthesia in horses.

Stijn leads the Anaesthesia Service at Ghent University, combining clinical work, teaching, and research with a strong focus on equine anaesthesia and welfare. His research has contributed to the development and validation of sedation and pain assessment tools in horses, including work on equine pain scales and objective monitoring systems. He played a key role in the development of the “Ghent Sedation Algorithm,” a structured clinical tool designed to guide sedation management in horses. Based on literature review and clinical experience, the algorithm uses numerical scoring of sedation depth, ataxia, and surgical conditions to adjust the administration rate of alpha-2 agonists during standing procedures. This work reflects his broader contribution to standardizing assessment of sedation and pain in equine patients.

He was a member of the Credentials and Education Committee of the ECVAA from 2010 to 2013, Honorary Secretary of the ECVAA from 2013 to 2020, Vice-President of the ECVAA from April 2020 until April 2023 and ECVAA representative in the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation from 2013 until 2020. He is the current President of the ECVAA. He has (co-)authored voer 200 scientific publications.
